Term referring to a group of over a thousand spells, selections of which were inscribed on coffins during the Middle Kingdom (2055-1795 BCE). They were intended to provide a guarantee of survival in the afterworld. Many of these spells were derived from the pyramid texts, and some of them were the ancestors of spells found in the New Kingdom Book of the Dead.
