During the meal taken by Jesus and his disciples prior to his crucifixion, Jesus advised that one of his disciples would betray him, namely Judas Iscariot.  Jesus took some bread gave thanks and offered it to his disciples saying "This is my body".  After supper, he took a chalice with wine and referred to the wine as his blood and sacrifice on their behalf, being the new covenant.
