The Antiquities Museum launches the application Amduat Book Papyrus
20 March 2025
As part of its role in disseminating Egyptian heritage using modern technologies and making it accessible to young people and all age groups, the BA has launched the Wall of Knowledge of the Amduat Papyrus project in the Afterlife Hall of the Antiquities Museum. The project is a cooperation between the Library’s Antiquities Museum and the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT).
The project aims to provide a unique experience for museum visitors using augmented reality technology, where the inscriptions on the papyrus are translated through an interactive application on tablets and smartphones. Visitors can direct their phone cameras towards the scenes and drawings of the papyrus and can listen to an audio explanation of the events of the selected scene in Arabic or English.
This papyrus is of great archaeological value as it documents the era of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt (circa 1539-1292 BC). Of all the Books of the Netherworld, Amduat is the clearest in its description of the voyage of the sun deity through the twelve nocturnal hours. The main concept of the Amduat is the regeneration of the sun deity, which flows through twelve sections (hours) from sunset to sunrise.
Visitors can download the application before or during their visit to the Library's Afterlife Hall, through the BA account on the Apple Store and Google Play in the following links:
