The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector in collaboration with the Hellenic Research Institute of Alexandrian Civilization organizes the exhibition Twenty Years of Excavations at Shallalat Gardens (2006–2026). The exhibition will be held on Friday, 24 April 2026, at 12:30 pm, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Main Building, Antiquities Museum.
The excavations conducted by the Hellenic Research Institute of Alexandrian Civilization reveal new evidences for the history and topography of Ancient Alexandria. The exhibition presents key discoveries from two decades of archaeological research at Shallalat Gardens in Alexandria, shedding light on the topography of the ancient city, in all historical phases.
Highlights include a Hellenistic statue, most probably, identified with Alexander the Great, remains of a monumental public building, part of a major Roman road (L2), part of the Hellenistic Royal Road R1 and a large subterranean tunnel. These findings provide important new evidence for the topography of Alexandria’s Royal Quarter.
The exhibition offers fresh insights into the historical development of one of the most significant ancient cities of Mediterranean and underscores the importance of long-term archaeological research in reconstructing its past.
