The Antiquities Museum and the Zahi Hawass Center of Egyptology; affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandria Cultural Outreach Sector, organize an online lecture entitled “The Relations between Egypt and West African People until the End of the Medieval Age”. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Ismail Hamed Ismail Aly, Researcher in African History, University of Minnesota, the United States of America. The lecture will be broadcasted on Sunday, 3 April 2022; 12:00 noon, via the Antiquities Museum’s Facebook page: Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum.
The lecture sheds light on the relations between Egypt and the inhabitants of West Africa, known as the “People of Takrur” across different ages, especially until the end of medieval age. African students were keen on living in Cairo. Thus, over time, a reputable community of the people of Takrur in Cairo formed, and their integration with the Egyptians increased. An example of the mutual influence between the people of Takrur and the Egyptian society is that there is a district in Cairo called “al-Takrur”, which is Bulaq al-Takrur (or al-Dakrour). The people of Takrur still have aspects of their authentic African heritage bearing witness to them.
