Training: The Art of Jewelry Making

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum, affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector, organizes a training course entitled “The Art of Jewelry Making” on Monday and Tuesday, 13–14 June 2022, in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Conference Center, Multipurpose Hall.

The course includes a number of lectures that shed light on one of the most prominent types of ancient arts, the art of jewelry making. Ancient Egyptians mastered treating and transforming the natural elements extracted from the earth into materials with new qualities that serve specific purposes. This necessarily accompanied the invention of new tools and technologies to serve that purpose, which were characterized by simplicity and accuracy at the same time. The types of jewelry in ancient Egypt were divided into two types according to their characteristics, nature and source; metal ornaments made of gold, silver and precious metals, and ornaments formed from precious and semi-precious stones. Ancient Egyptians profusely used jewelry in their daily life for adornment, or for believing in their magical powers that bring strength and good fortune, or ward off evil spirits.

First day activities include a set of lectures on the importance of the art of jewelry making and its history, in addition to lectures on the materials used in manufacturing jewelry, the locations of these materials, and the techniques used in that manufacture. On the second day, a workshop will be held on how to make an artistic model of jewelry, whereby the trainee can make a simple model of jewelry themselves.
Training duration: 10 hours divided into two days.

Target group: From 18 years old and above.
Maximum number of attendees: 30 people.
Priority is given to early attendees of the training course’s first day;
registration starts on Monday, 13 June 2022; 9:30 am.
