Revival of Egypt through the Late Period

The Antiquities Museum and the Zahi Hawass Center of Egyptology, affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, organize a lecture entitled “Revival of Egypt through the Late Period”, on Sunday, 29 January 2023; 1:00 p.m., in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Main Building, Fourth Floor Floating Room. The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Khaled Gharib, Professor and Head of the Greco-Roman Archaeology Department, Faculty of Archaeology, Cairo University.

The lecture sheds light on the conditions in Egypt and the entrance of the Ionians for the first time as mercenaries in the Egyptian army, Egypt's commercial efforts in the Mediterranean, then the Persian resistance against the great powers at the time, the end of the conflict with the entry of Cambyses into Egypt and the establishment of the twenty-seventh dynasty. The lecture also discusses how the Egyptians' national spirit grew in the beginning of the fifth century BCE, so they revolted against the Persians until they defeated them and expelled them from Egypt in 404 BCE, and how they established the twenty-eighth dynasty, the first and last dynasty in which one king ruled. However, soon after that the army leaders revolted and killed him, appointing a king from among them, and establishing the twenty-ninth dynasty. It was followed by the thirtieth dynasty which resisted the expansion of the Persians. Their struggle ended with the return of the Persian forces to Egypt, establishing what is known as the thirty-first dynasty or the second Persian era, which did not last long because it collided with powerful forces that emerged from Macedonia to control the world, i.e. that of Alexander the Great.
