The Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum is holding a lecture entitled “Unearthing Amenhotep: Current Excavations by the Joint Expedition to Malqata in the Festival Palace of Amenhotep III at Thebes”. The lecture will be held on Monday, 5 March 2018, at the Afterlife Section, Antiquities Museum, Bibliotheca Alexandrina Main Building (B1), at 2:00 pm; and will be given by Dr. Janice Kamrin, Associate Curator, Department of Egyptian Art, The Metropolitan of Art. The researcher will discuss Amenhotep III—likely the father of the heretic pharaoh Akhenaten and the grandfather of Tutankhamun—who lived during the height of Egypt’s Golden Age. Toward the end of his long reign, this king celebrated three festivals of rejuvenation, for which he built a vast complex on the West Bank of the Nile at the site of Malqata. The Metropolitan Museum of Art explored the site for a decade in the early 1900s, and several other expeditions worked here during the late 20th century. Since 2008, the Joint Expedition to Malqata, sponsored by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Ancient Egyptian Heritage and Archaeology Fund, has been carrying out excavations and conservation work on the King’s Palace, an industrial zone, and several settlement sites. Finally, she will present the expedition's recent findings.
