The BA Antiquities Museum is organizing a lecture titled “Discovery of the First Sunken Islamic Harbor in the Gulf of Aqaba, Jordan” on Tuesday, 5 March 2019 at 12:00 noon, in the BA Main Building, Third Floor Floating Room (F3). The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Sawsan Alfakhry (Madaba Institute for Mosaic Art and Restoration, Jordan), and Archaeologist Islam Seleim, Director of the Red Sea Department, Central Department of Underwater Antiquities, Ministry of Antiquities.
The lecture will discuss the first underwater archaeological discovery in Jordan that was conducted by the Royal Marine Conservation Society funded by United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This is the first discovery of its kind in Jordan and it uncovered the harbor of Elath, which, according to historical sources, was used in the Islamic era and is one of several harbors located along the north coast of the Gulf of Aqaba dating back to different historical eras.
