When Romans Chose the Egyptian Style

 The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) Antiquities Museum, affiliated with the Cultural Outreach Sector, organizes a lecture entitled "When Romans Chose the Egyptian Style" on Monday, 11 November 2019, 1:00 pm, at the BA, Main Building, Third Floor Floating Room (F3). Dr. Paul Edmund Stanwick, New York University, will deliver the lecture. The speaker will explore several case studies of Romans choosing the Egyptian style for sculpture and other objects; as well as will evaluate some of the current theories on why Romans made such choices. A number of questions will be explored. What did Romans understand about traditional Egyptian art and culture and what new meanings might they have added? Why did Romans move objects out of Egyptian temples into new contexts? Why did Romans commission new objects in the Egyptian style? What aspects of Egyptian culture might have been particularly appealing and why?
