“Marriage Contracts in Ptolemaic Egypt in the Light of Papyri” in an Interactive Lecture at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina

The Antiquities Museum and the Zahi Hawass Center of Egyptology; affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Cultural Outreach Sector, in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology and Civilization, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, organize an online lecture entitled “Marriage Contracts in Ptolemaic Egypt in the Light of Papyri”. The lecture is delivered by Dr. Mahmoud Labib El-Bokl, Lecturer of Ancient Egyptian Language, Department of Archaeology and Civilization, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University. The lecture will be broadcasted on Tuesday, 31 August 2021; 7:30 pm, on the “Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum” Facebook page.
The lecture sheds light on marriage contracts, and the clauses and obligations they contained; especially during the Ptolemaic period, from which a good number of documents survived to contribute greatly to our understanding of the nature of marriage in Ancient Egypt. We will also present four unpublished marriage contracts from Middle Egypt, which contain many important and interesting details.
