The Antiquities Museum and Zahi Hawass Center of Egyptology, affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), in cooperation with the Department of Archeology and Civilization, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, organize an online lecture entitled “Radiating Inscriptions on Mamluk Architecture in Egypt”. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Mohamed Mohamed Morsi Ali, Assistant Professor of Archeology and Islamic Archaeological Writings, Department of Archeology and Civilization, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University. The lecture will be broadcast on Thursday, 9 September 2021, at 7:30 pm, via the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum's Facebook page.
The lecture sheds light on the creativity of the Muslim artist in using Arabic calligraphy as a decorative element on Mamluk buildings in Egypt, and among these creations is the use of radiating writings inside Mamluk buildings. Radiating writings are the writings executed within a circular shape, and the edges of the letters extend with a clear elongation towards the center to appear in the form of a radiant sun. Sometimes, the artist is satisfied with writing inside the circular shape without elongating the letters, and the direction of writing is often to the inside of the circle towards its center, so that the center of the circle becomes the sun, and the letters are the rays. The writing direction is rarely outward, where the circle itself becomes the sun, and the outward-pointing letters are the rays.
