The Antiquities Museum and the ZahiHawassCenter for Egyptology; affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandria Cultural Outreach Sector, organize an online lecture entitled “Sea Gods and Goddesses in Greco–Roman Egypt”. The lecture is delivered by Prof. Sara El-Sayed Kitat, Professor at the Tour Guiding Department, Faculty of Tourism and Hotels, Alexandria University. The lecture is broadcast on Saturday, 14 August 2021; 7:30 pm, on the “Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum” Facebook page.
The lecture sheds light on Isis, the goddess of the seas in Greco–Roman Egypt. Isis Pharia, IsisPelagia and IsisAphrodite are the main forms of Isis as a sea goddess. Moreover, the god Serapis became one of the sea patrons of Egypt; he was worshipped in the Serapeum at Alexandria, which overlooks the Mediterranean Sea. The Egyptian goddess Neith was also worshipped as a sea goddess, and was responsible for collecting a tax entitled“Tribute of the Sea”. The cult of foreign sea deities was attested in Egypt, such as Yam, Poseidon, Phorcys, Proteus, Baal, and Astarte.
