Online Lecture

On the 2353rdanniversary of the foundation of the City of Alexandria, planned by Alexander the Great on 20 January 331 BCE. Alexandria was a capital during a period of exceptional civilizational interaction. The Antiquities Museum and the Zahi Hawass Center of Egyptology, affiliated to the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Cultural Outreach Sector, in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology and Civilization, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University, organize an online lecture entitled «Architectural Styles of Greco-Roman Egypt». The lecture will be delivered by Prof. Sobhi Ashour, Professor of Graeco-Roman Archaeology, Department of Archaeology and Civilization, Faculty of Arts, Helwan University. The lecture will be broadcasted on Sunday, 30January2022, at 7.30 pm, via the Archaeological Museum's Facebook page: Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum.
The lecture sheds light on the interesting and peculiar cultural experience of Greco-Roman Egypt, where the two cultures began to coexist separately; however, the unique blending gradually produced a distinctive flavor of the Greek-Egyptian traditions. Architecture is an exciting aspect for telling this story and illustrating its patterned and stylistic manifestations. For religious and political reasons, local Egyptian traditions continued and new temples such as Dendera, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Philae were adapted. This blending was also reflected in domestic and funerary buildings; however, further archaeological studies are needed to enhance our knowledge in this respect.
