Mosaic Art Course

27 February 2022 - 28 February 2022

The Antiquities Museum, affiliated to the Cultural Outreach Sector at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), organizes a training course titled “Mosaic Art”, at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Conference Center, Multipurpose Hall, on Sunday and Monday, 27-28 February 2022, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

This course includes a number of lectures that shed light on one of the most prominent types of ancient art: the art of mosaic. The mosaic industry has spread and the methods of its implementation and the purposes for which it was made have diversified since ancient times, especially in Greece, Asia Minor and Italy. This form of art was mainly fostered in the Mediterranean basin and its islands. Mosaics were used in the past to decorate floors and walls during the Greek and Roman eras, then archways and churches during the Coptic era, and domes and minarets during the Islamic era, and extended to a variety of uses in the modern era. Mosaic decoration styles included several themes; geometric, botanical, mythical, subjects inspired by everyday life, and others. These depicted subjects reflect aspects of daily, social, economic, and even political life in those eras. The stones, mosaic sizes and colors used also played a prominent role in adding precision and beauty to any painting.

The first day of the course will include a set of lectures on the importance and history of mosaic art, as well as lectures on the maintenance and restoration of mosaics and stones. The second day will include a workshop on how to make a simple model of mosaic so that the trainees can create their own artworks.

Course duration: 10 hours divided onto two days.
Target group: 18 years old and above.
Maximum number of attendees: 40.
Registration is required for attendance.
